This film is based on the book "Brideshead Revisited, The Sacred & Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder" (1945) by Evelyn Waugh. This is not gay literature nor queer cinema. It's rather a poignant story of forbidden love and the loss of innocence set in England prior to World War II. The memoirs of Captain Charles Ryder who is stationed at Brideshead Castle during WWII and remembers his involvement with the owners of the Brideshead estate: the aristocratic yet Catholic Flyte family and in particular brother and sister Sebastian and Julia.
The precise nature of Charles and Sebastian's relationship remains a topic of debate; whether they are simply close friends or if Evelyn Waugh hints at a sexual relationship between the two is not definitely established, even though the sexual tension between the two young men is obvious. Given that much of the first half of the novel focuses on the initial encounter, blossoming friendship and eventual estrangement of these central characters, this issue continues to pique the curiosity of readers.
Readers who interpret the relationship as overtly homosexual quote such lines as the fact that Charles had been "in search of love in those days" when he first met Sebastian, and his finding "that low door in the wall ... which opened on an enclosed and enchanted garden" - an image that some interpret as a Freudian metaphor for homosexual sex.
It is worth noting that although the issue of focusing on religion and the imperatives of social behavior, (and the guilt and inhibitions these two imply) is a bit old-fashioned theme, the director overcomes this hurdle by putting in the foreground not the homosexuality nor the desire for social advancement of young Charles (cliché cinema issues now), but the guilt one feels when one betrays a lover, by ending up in the arms of a relative of the beloved !
Η "Επιστροφή στο Μπράϊντσχεντ" (1945) είναι βιβλίο τής Εβελυν Βων και το 1998 κατέλαβε την 80ή θέση στην λίστα τών 100 αριστουργημάτων τής αγγλόφωνης λογοτεχνίας τού 20ού αιώνα. Δεν πρόκειται για γκέη λογοτεχνία ούτε για queer σινεμά. Το βιβλίο αναφέρεται στην σχέση ενός αστού, φιλόδοξου νέου με μια αυστηρά Καθολική, αριστοκρατική βρετανική οικογένεια πριν τον Β' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Ειδικά στην σχέση τού νέου αστού Τσάρλς με τον φανερά ομοφυλόφιλο γυιό Σεμπάστιαν και την αδελφή του Τζούλια. Ούτε το βιβλίο ούτε η ταινία δείχνουν τα δύο αγόρια να έχουν σεξουαλική σχέση μεταξύ τους, όμως η ερωτική έλξη ανάμεσά τους είναι φανερή, ειδικά απ΄την μεριά τού Σεμπάστιαν. Απλά υπάρχουν υπονοούμενα και σχόλια, που δηλώνουν κάτι παραπάνω από "Πλατωνική" φιλία.
Στο φιλμ "Επιστροφή στο Μπράϊντσχεντ", παρότι δεν αποτελεί μια πιστή μεταφορά τού μυθιστορήματος, εντούτοις εξαιτίας του πολύ καλογραμμένου σεναρίου, ο σκηνοθέτης Τζούλιαν Τζάρολντ σκιαγραφεί και αναπτύσσει με ζηλευτή "λογοτεχνική" μαεστρία τους χαρακτήρες του μυθιστορήματος τής Εβελυν Βων, παρότι στην πραγματικότητα η ανάπτυξη τους είναι πολύ διαφορετική στην ταινία από ό,τι στο βιβλίο! Αξίζει μάλιστα να σημειωθεί ότι αν και το θέμα της συμπλοκής της χριστιανικής θρησκείας και των επιταγών κοινωνικής συμπεριφοράς, που αυτή συνεπάγεται, με τις ενοχές και τις αναστολές μας είναι ένα θέμα κάπως παλιομοδίτικο, ο σκηνοθέτης της ταινίας ξεπερνά αυτό το σκόπελο βάζοντας σε πρώτο πλάνο όχι την ομοφυλοφιλία ούτε και τη θέληση για κοινωνική άνοδο του νεαρού πρωταγωνιστή ("πολυφορεμένα" θέματα κινηματογραφικά πλέον), αλλά τις ενοχές που νιώθει κάποιος όταν προδίδει έναν εραστή καταλήγοντας στην αγκαλιά συγγενικού του προσώπου!
