Law Of Desire (La Ley Del Deseo) (1987)

Popular film director Pablo Quintero (Eusebio Poncela) has found a new love in the form of handsome blue-collar Juan (Miguel Molina). Not altogether comfortable with his lifestyle, Juan decides to leave Pablo for a while to contemplate his future. Pablo insists that Juan keep in touch by sending him love letters. Ever the director, he plans to write the letters himself, and have Juan mail them back with his signature. If you think that settles things, you don't know filmmaker Pedro Almodovar. Among the many plot complications in Law of Desire is Pablo's subsequent romance with the possessive Antonio (Antonio Banderas, whose "gay kiss" in the film prompted front-page headlines in the Brazilian press), and Pablo's efforts to film the life story of his sister (Carmen Maura), who started out life as his brother.

Ένας σκηνοθέτης, ο Πάμπλο, είναι ερωτευμένος με τον Χουάν, με τον οποίον διατηρεί ερωτικές σχέσεις, αλλά δεν καταφέρνει να κερδίσει και την αγάπη του. Ένα καλοκαίρι ο που ο Χουάν λείπει σε διακοπές, ο Πάμπλο γνωρίζει τον Αντόνιο, έναν ψυχωτικό νέο, ο οποίος δεν είχε προηγούμενες ομοφυλοφιλικές εμπειρίες. Όταν ο Πάμπλο αποφασίζει να ξανασμίξει με τον Χουάν, ο παθολογικά ζηλότυπος Αντόνιο σκοτώνει τον Χουάν και, για να ξαναβρεθεί με τον Πάμπλο, χρησιμοποιεί την αδελφή του, την Τίνα, η οποία ήταν κάποτε αγόρι και άλλαξε φύλλο για να ικανοποιήσει τον αιμομίκτη πατέρα της. Ο Αντόνιο θα μπορέσει τελικά να κάνει για μια ακόμη φορά, έρωτα με τον Πάμπλο πριν συναντήσει το θάνατο? Ο «Νόμος του πόθου» κατέχει ξεχωριστή θέση στη φιλμογραφία του Πέδρο Αλμοδόβαρ, και για πολλούς θεωρείται μια από τις καλύτερες δημιουργίες του διάσημου Ισπανού σκηνοθέτη. Η ομοφυλοφιλία, θέμα που συχνά συναντούμε σε πολλές ταινίες του, εδώ βρίσκεται στο επίκεντρο της δραματουργίας, ενώ για πρώτη φορά σ? αυτήν την ταινία ο (συχνά αποκαλούμενος «σκηνοθέτης γυναικών») Αλμοδόβαρ εστιάζει το ενδιαφέρον του πάνω στους ανδρικούς χαρακτήρες. Στο επίκεντρο της πολυσύνθετης πλοκής της ταινίας βρίσκεται ο Πάμπλο, το κινηματογραφικό άλτερ-έγκο του Αλμοδόβαρ: ένας ομοφυλόφιλος σκηνοθέτης που «σκηνοθετεί» τη ζωή του, αλλά και τις ζωές των άλλων, έχοντας την τέχνη ως καταφύγιο και αντιστάθμισμα για τις ανεκπλήρωτες επιθυμίες του. Αντίθετα, ο μονολιθικός και απόλυτος Αντόνιο, για τον οποίον δεν υπάρχει τίποτα πέρα από τη βιώμενη πραγματικότητα, αφήνει την ορμή του πόθου να τον παρασύρει μέχρι τον θάνατο. Ο «Νόμος του πόθου» τιμήθηκε με το Teddy Award στο φεστιβάλ Βερολίνου, απέσπασε βραβεία και διακρίσεις σε πολλές διεθνείς κινηματογραφικές διοργανώσεις και συνέβαλε στην διεθνή καθιέρωση ηθοποιών όπως η Κάρμεν Μάουρα και ο νεαρότατος τότε Αντόνιο Μπαντέρας.

This French Canadian psychological drama begins as homosexual hustler Yves is having sex with his lover Claude. During the climactic moment, he grabs a knife and cuts the throat of his partner and then flees to the streets of Montreal where he pauses only long enough to make a phone call. The killer is captured and is next seen in a judge's chamber undergoing interrogation. He freely admits the crime but refuses to explain why he did it. Nor does he explain why he is in the judge's chamber or why he called the press. Eventually he does explain himself during a long impassioned, self-piteous speech.

SEBASTIANE (Derek Jarman) (1976)

Derek Jarman's 'Sebastiane' is a momentous painting which is simply brushed on film rather than canvas. This is a master work and should be in any serious film buff's cabinet. (I should very much like to see it running continuously upon a smooth stone wall of a monumental pillared vestibule - perhaps like the Four Seasons in New York. It's visual beauty should be constantly on view.

Not one element could be added or deleted. If I may continue the painting analogy, each stroke, whether finished or raw melds this work into a composition which I think is flawless. The men are beautiful, but in a tangible human manner. The settings, whether Diocletian's startling lurid palace or the rough bare terrain of Sardinia evoke both pagan and Christian motifs flawlessly. Good and evil (and all shades between) found in both places; the irony of the world as it is and has always been.

The homoerotic nature of the film is visceral, candid rather than overtly condescending - it might well be set in modern Iraq with 21st century troops. I felt each character's longings, whether for the god of carnal flesh or that of human love and companionship or a spiritual and other worldly deity. The recognition that each of these forms of Eros may intertwine and meld is genius. It is Everyman. It is a scrupulous portrait of the easily duplicitous qualities of beauty, deceit, brutality and even truth. Powerful stuff.

Latter Days (2003)

Aaron Davis (Steve Sandvoss) and Christian Markelli (Wes Ramsey) are the two most opposite people in the world. Aaron is a young Elder (or a Mormon missionary) who wants to do his family proud and is quite passionate about his religion and film. Christian is a shallow WeHo waiter/party boy who only looks forward to bedding a new guy every night. After Aaron and three other missionaries move into the apartment across from Christian, his friends bet him $50 that he can't get one of them to jump into the sack, so he instantly latches onto Aaron. There are two problems, though - Christian is falling in love with Aaron and the Mormons are not the biggest fans of the homosexual community. Once Aaron is discovered, the two have to go through trials of regret, loss, perseverance, and forgiveness if they both want to get to the thing that matters to them most: each other.


Το “Latter Days” είναι μια ταινία που ξαφνιάζει όταν την πρωτοβλέπεις στο κινηματογραφικό πανί, πρώτον λόγω του ημιερασιτεχνικού τρόπου του γυρίσματός της και δεύτερον λόγω του τολμηρού θέματος και περιεχομένου της. Αφηγείται την ιστορία ενός νεαρού μορμόνου, ο οποίος μετακομίζει απέναντι από έναν ομοφυλόφιλο και σταδιακά, ανάμεσά τους, αναπτύσσεται μία έντονη ερωτική επιθυμία που σταδιακά μετατρέπεται σε αληθινό έρωτα. Οι δύο νέοι προσπαθούν να καταλάβουν ο ένας τις ιδιαιτερότητες της κοινωνικής και σεξουαλικής μερίδας στην οποία ανήκει ο καθένας, αντιμετωπίζοντας τις αντιδράσεις της συντηρητικής κοινότητας των μορμόνων, με τους πολύ αυστηρούς ηθικούς κανόνες, κυρίως σε ότι αφορά την σεξουαλική ζωή των μελών της.

Παρά την φανερή πρωτοτυπία και τολμηρότητα της, για ταινία που κυκλοφορεί ευρέως στις αίθουσες και όχι μόνο σε περιορισμένες προβολές σε καθορισμένα κλαμπ και λέσχες, η ταινία, δυστυχώς, αδυνατεί να εξισορροπήσει ανάμεσα σε ένα πολύ κακό πρώτο μέρος και ένα πολύ καλό δεύτερο. Το πρώτο μέρος της ταινίας, που αφορά την εισαγωγή των χαρακτήρων και την αρχή των σχέσεων μεταξύ τους, παρουσιάζει αρκετές ανιαρές καταστάσεις, αδύναμη παρουσίαση των ηρώων, τραγελαφικά σημεία, συμβατική σκηνοθεσία και διαλόγους, καθώς και μερικές απόλυτες στάσεις σε ότι αφορά τους μορμόνους και τους ομοφυλοφίλους, καθώς και κακές υποκριτικές στιγμές.

Αντίθετα, στο δεύτερο μέρος, όταν τα καταπιεσμένα πνεύματα των δύο πρωταγωνιστών (Steve Sandvoss, Wes Ramsey) απελευθερώνονται, τότε είναι που η ταινία παίρνει πραγματικά εμπρός και με σοκαριστικές σκηνές (είτε όμορφες, είτε άσχημες), εντυπωσιακούς μονολόγους και διαλόγους και δύο πρωταγωνιστές, που τότε αρχίζουν να μπαίνουν στους ρόλους τους. Κάλλιο αργά…

Στο σύνολό της ταινίας, ο C.J. Cox καταφέρνει να δώσει μια πολύπλευρη άποψη του θέματος της ομοφυλοφιλίας, που δεν μιλάει μόνο σε όσους την ασπάζονται, αλλά και σε αυτούς που προσπαθούν να στρέψουν το βλέμμα μακριά της ή και να την καταπολεμήσουν. Παρ’όλα αυτά, (και, φαντάζομαι, παρά τη θέληση του σκηνοθέτη) το εγχείρημα δεν φαίνεται να αντιμετωπίστηκε με την αρμόζουσα σοβαρότητα, καταντώντας αρκετές φορές προσβλητικό ακόμη και για τα μέλη της gay κοινότητας, τα οποία παρουσιάζονται τις περισσότερες φορές, ως λάγνα πλάσματα, που δεν κάνουν τίποτα όλη μέρα παρά να μιλάνε για σεξ και για την ομοφυλοφιλία τους, ενώ το βράδυ να την εξασκούν αδιαλείπτως… Μάλιστα, μία σκηνή στην οποία ο ομοφυλόφιλος Christian προσπαθεί να αναπτύξει κάποιο είδος κουβέντας πριν την συνουσία με κάποιον άλλον gay, η απαίτησή του αυτή παρουσιάζεται με χλευαστικό τρόπο σαν ένα βίτσιο.

Η κοινωνική τάξη των μορμόνων, από την άλλη, δείχνεται ως αυστηρή και αμείλικτη, πράγμα που (χωρίς να αμφιβάλλω ότι ενδέχεται να είναι) δεν κάνει ρεαλιστική αντίθεση με τον gay τρόπο ζωής, καθώς πρόκειται για δύο αντίθετα άκρα για το ένα εκ των οποίων (αυτό των μορμόνων, δηλαδή) δύσκολα θα ενδιαφερθεί ο μέσος θεατής. Η επιλογή ως χαρακτήρα, ενός straight από συντηρητικό, μεσοαστικό περιβάλλον, χωρίς τις θρησκευτικές παρεμβολές, ίσως να ήταν πιο σοφή επιλογή.

Γενικά, το “Latter Days” είναι μια αρκετά συμπαθητική ταινία, που προσπαθεί να πει τα πράγματα όπως έχουν. Αν στο έργο της αυτό παρεμβάλονται αρκετά κλισέ, υπερβολές, μέτριες στιγμές και φαινόμενα μη- αξιοοπίησης της ευκαιρίας της gay κοινότητας να μιλήσει στο ευρύ κοινό για τον εαυτό της με σοβαρότητα, ρίχνοντας έτσι το επίπεδο της ταινίας, αυτό είναι στα χέρια του κάθε θεατή για να το κρίνει, πάντα με ανοιχτό μυαλό και μάτια.

When Molly, the 21 year-old sister of Maarten, departs the family home, she leaves her older brother with empty nest syndrome. Snowtown (2011)

Sixteen-year-old Jamie lives with his mother, Elizabeth, and two younger brothers, Alex and Nicholas, in a housing trust home in Adelaide's northern suburbs. Their home is but one of many sun-starved houses crammed together to cater for a disenfranchised society. Jamie longs for an escape from the violence and hopelessness that surrounds him and his salvation arrives in the form of John, a charismatic man who unexpectedly comes to his aid. As John spends more and more time with Jamie's family, Elizabeth and her boys begin to experience a stability and sense of family that they have never known. John moves from the role of Jamie's protector to that of a mentor, indoctrinating Jamie into his world, a world brimming with bigotry, righteousness and malice. Like a son mimicking his father, Jamie soon begins to take on some of John's traits and beliefs as he spends more and more time with him and his select group of friends. The protection and guidance that John presents to Jamie is initially welcomed however as events occur around him, including the disappearance of several people, Jamie begins to harbour deep suspicions about John and his motivations. When the truth is finally revealed to Jamie his hopes of happiness are threatened by both his loyalty for, and fear of, his father-figure John Bunting, Australia's most notorious serial killer.


Αυτή είναι μια ζοφερή, δυνατή και ίσως δυσάρεστη ταινία, με βάση πραγματικά γεγονότα (Snowtown Murders 1992-1999) στα οποία έλαβε μέρος ένας έφηβος Ελληνοαυστραλός, ο Τζέημυ Βλασάκης. Αφορά στην ιστορία του John Bunting ίσως του πιο διαβόητου κατά συρροή δολοφόνου της Αυστραλίας. Ο δεκαέξι ετών Jamie Vlassakis, κακοποιείται σεξουαλικά απ'τον ετεροθαλή αδελφό του Troy. O Jamie γίνεται φίλος με τον χαρισματικό Bunting, και τον θεωρεί ως ένα είδος πατέρα-πρότυπο και τελικά συντάσσεται με το δολοφονικό ξέσπασμα τού Bunting. Σκοτώνουν τον Troy και πολλούς άλλους. Τα περισσότερα από τα θύματα ήταν γκέη άνδρες ή παιδόφιλοι και ενώ οι περισσότερες από τις δολοφονίες συμβαίνουν εκτός οθόνης, η ταινία εξακολουθεί να είναι επί δύο ώρες μια πολύ έντονη εμπειρία. Το Snowtown απεικονίζει βασανισμούς και δολοφονίες με έναν τρόπο που είναι σχεδόν ντοκουμενταρίστικος. Ο σκηνοθέτης δεν βασίζεται σε γραφική απεικόνιση, αλλά περισσότερο στην ψυχολογία τού φόβου, τής πρόβλεψης και τής αγωνίας.Είναι ένα οικογενειακό θρίλερ τρόμου, όπου σταδιακά ένας άνθρωπος μετατρέπεται σε τέρας. Αυτή είναι μια άσχημη και δυσάρεστη ταινία για τη χειρότερη πλευρά ανθρώπων, που ξέσπαγαν εις βάρος γκέη ανδρών κυρίως ! Ο σκηνοθέτης Justin Kurzel, κέρδισε βραβείο στο Φεστιβάλ Καννών 2011.

A Jihad for Love (2007)

Being different than others, and to confront the community pressure are not always easy. Especially if you are a gay in a Muslim country such as Egypt or Iran you have to face the fact that you may have jail sentence, be tortured or be punished by death for the homosexual act. According to the Islamic law, a homosexual should be thrown from a mountain or stoned to death. Ibn Abbas, Muhammad's cousin, reports how homosexuals were punished in Muhammad's period: "If you find anyone doing as Lot's people did, kill the one who does it, and the one to whom it is done" (Abu Dawud no. 4447)

A Jihad for Love dares to be the voice of the silenced ones and tells the struggles of gay/lesbian people from Egypt, Iran, India and so on. Some decided to get marry with a woman, some leaved their country to avoid the death penalty, some risked to be away from their home and chose to be a refugee to live with their real identities.

 Το «A JIHAD FOR LOVE» είναι το πρώτο ντοκιμαντέρ μεγάλου μήκους, παγκοσμίως, που ερευνά την περίπλοκη σχέση μεταξύ του Ισλάμ και της ομοφυλοφιλίας. Ο Parvez εισχωρεί στους πολλαπλούς κόσμους του Ισλάμ φέρνοντας στο φως διάφορες ιστορίες τόσο πολυποίκιλες όσο το ίδιο το Ισλάμ. Το έργο ταξιδεύει ευρέως παρουσιάζοντάς μας ζωές από την Ινδία, το Πακιστάν, το Ιράν, την Τουρκία, την Αίγυπτο, τη Νότιο Αφρική και τη Γαλλία. Πάντα κινηματογραφώντας κρυφά και ως μουσουλμάνος, ο Parvez δημιουργεί το ντοκιμαντέρ διαμέσου της πίστης, απεικονίζοντας το Ισλάμ με τον ίδιο σεβασμό που δείχνουν οι χαρακτήρες του έργου του.

Mr Right (2009)

Harry hates being a TV producer and dreams of leaving his job to travel the world. He loves Alex, an aspiring actor who is struggling to create an identity for himself as a performer. Rugby player William's nine-year-old daughter is intent on sabotaging his relationships with new boyfriends, and he's finding it difficult to let Lawrence, the soap star, into his life. Lars is a handsome sometime-model kept by Tom, a successful artist, who will excuse his every betrayal so long as Lars doesn't leave him. And Louise (the Greek born Georgia Zaris) is the fag hag of the group who introduces her boyfriend to her gay friends and that makes him gay !!!

This is a film that received mediocre reviews, still it's one that I love and hence decided to make the Greek subs. It touches some sensitive issues e.g. gay parenting, a big issue around the World and amongst the gay communities. And this being a Brit film, it shows the still omnipresent class divisions in the UK.

Ο τηλεοπτικός παραγωγός Χάρυ, που μισεί την δουλειά του, έχει γκόμενο τον νεαρό Αλεξ, ένα πικρόχολο, αποτυχημένο, φαφλατά ηθοποιό. Ο ζωγράφος Τόμυ συντηρεί ένα όμορφο, γυμνασμένο τσόλι, τον Λαρς, που ξενοπηδάει και γουστάρει τον Χάρυ. Ο αντικέρ Γουίλιαμ, πρώην στρέητ-νυν γκαίη πατέρας μιάς 9-χρονης διαβολικής κόρης, θέλει να κάνει σχέση με τον Λώρενς αλλά η κόρη του τον εμποδίζει. Τέλος η αδερφομάνα Λουίζ (η γεννημένη στην Ελλάδα Georgia Zaris) κάνει το μοιραίο λάθος να συστήσει τον "στρέητ" γκόμενό της Πωλ στους γκαίη φίλους της.

Πέρα απ'τις μέτριες κριτικές, η ταινία θέτει και σημαντικά ζητήματα τής εποχής μας (για άλλες χώρες βέβαια !), όπως το θέμα τών γκαίη γονιών. Και όντας Βρετανική ταινία, υπάρχουν και οι πανταχού παρούσες ταξικές διαφορές στο Ην. Βασίλειο, ο σνομπισμός κλπ. Και ίσως χάρη στην Georgia Zaris, οι αναφορές στην Ελλάδα είναι συχνές (πχ η ρετσάϊνα μας - ρετσίνα !!)

Das Trio (1998)

When partners in crime become partners in bed...
Zobel and Karl are a long time gay couple who live together in a trailer home with Lizzie, Zobel's spunky daughter from a heterosexual misadventure. Together these three form a team of thieves who eke out an existence as pickpockets. After a botched job, Karl becomes unable to work, forcing Zobel and Lizzie to seek out a new partner. Lizzie recruits Rudolf, the boyishly charming town misfit. Reluctantly, Zobel allows Rudolf to join them but warns him to never break the golden rule: "No exchanging of bodily fluids within the team." This dictum becomes increasingly difficult to live by as Lizzie's cravings and Zobel's own passions toward Rudolf intensify. Eventually, the golden rule is broken by Lizzie...and then again by Zobel (unbeknownst to Lizzie, of course). An intricate love triangle soon develops amongst the three that is shaped by deception, desire, and betrayal.

Zusammen mit seiner Tochter Lizzi (Jeanette Hain) und seinem Lebenspartner Karl (Christian Redl) bildet der Ganove Zobel (Götz George) ein Taschendiebtrio, das von Stadt zu Stadt zieht. Nachdem Karl bei einem Unfall stirbt, finden Zobel und Lizzi mit dem jungen Rudolf (Felix Eitner) schnell Ersatz. Zunächst läuft alles nach Plan, doch dann verlieben sich Vater und Tochter in den Neuling.
Das Trio von der renommierten TV-Regisseurin Hermine Huntgeburth ist eine recht vergnügliche Mischung aus witziger Gaunerkomödie und melancholischem Drama. Formal gesehen bewegt sich der Film zwar nur auf gehobenem Fernseh-Niveau, doch die Hauptdarsteller bringen Das Trio mit Leichtigkeit über die Runden. Besonders überzeugend ist einmal mehr Götz George, der hier zwar mit schwarz getuschten Augen einen Schwulen gibt, dabei aber trotzdem noch den Macho-Schimanski heraushängen lässt. Und dass das Happyend leicht anarchisch daherkommt und mal eine etwas andere Form der Einheit der Familie anbietet, ist auch schon eine kleine Glanzleistung.

Portugal's Fernando Pessoa and Greece's Constantine Cavafy were two of the greatest poets of the 20th century, and the literary giants finally met in 1929 aboard a transatlantic ocean liner carrying immigrants to the U.S. This genre-bending documentary from Greek filmmaker Stelios Charalambopoulos blends truth with fiction in imagining what that meeting must have been like, offering an innovative mix of archival footage and fictional re-enactments of the poets interacting with one of the ship's immigrant passengers.

Στις 21 Οκτωβρίου του 1929, το υπερωκεάνιο Saturnia ξεκινά από την Τεργέστη το ταξίδι του προς την Αμερική, μαζεύοντας μετανάστες από τα λιμάνια της Μεσογείου.
Ένας νεαρός Έλληνας που επιβιβάζεται στην Πάτρα θα γίνει μάρτυρας μιας απρόσμενης συνάντησης: μια νύχτα, σ’ αυτό το πλοίο που κουβαλά τα όνειρα του Νέου Κόσμου, θα λάβει χώρα η εξίσου ονειρική αλλά και πραγματική συνάντηση δυο μεγάλων ποιητών του αιώνα που πέρασε:
του Φερνάντο Πεσσόα και του Κωνσταντίνου Καβάφη.
