Looking For Langston (1989)

A black and white, fantasy-like recreation of high-society gay men during the Harlem Renaissance, with archival footage and photographs intercut with a story. A wake is going on, with mourners gathered around a coffin. Downstairs is an elegant bar where tuxedoed men dance and talk. One of them has a dream in which he comes upon Beauty, who seems to reject him, although when he awakes, Beauty is sleeping beside him. His story and his visits to the jazz and dance club are framed by voices reading from the poetry and essays of Hughes and others. The text is rarely explicit, but the freedom of gay Black men in the 1920s in Harlem is suggested and celebrated visually.

This German comedy revolves around a self-absorbed, self-important father and his gay son.  Guess which one is in the fashion industry.  Wrong, it's the straight dad.

Relying heavily on cinematic contrivances of confused identities and coincidences for the comedy, this pleasant film uses a comforbably blase' approach to the issue of sexual orientation.  Although not especially remarkable in any way, it is a pleasant diversion and a decent "date night" movie.

That's What I Am (2011)

Set in California against the backdrop of the mid-sixties, That's What I Am is a coming-of-age story that follows 12-year-old Andy Nichol (Chase Ellison), a bright student who, like most kids his age, will do anything to avoid conflict for fear of suffering overwhelming ridicule and punishment from his junior high school peers. Principal Kelner (Amy Madigan) suspends a school bully for brutally beating up a female classmate. When Andy watches "Big G" fearlessly confront the school bully about the incident, a series of events are triggered. Dream Boy (2008)

Set in 1970's rural Louisiana, shy 15 year-old Nathan (Stephan Bender) and his family have moved from one town to another trying to escape the domestic disintegration within their own home. When Nathan moves in next door to charismatic Roy (Maximillian Roeg), he escapes domestic abuse by developing a relationship with him. Roy is a hunky and honest yet sexually naïve 17 year-old school bus driver. They start a friendship as high school study partners, and soon their strong emotional bond takes a natural turn towards physical attraction, a secret they must hide from those around them in their rural community. In fact, the two learn about one another mostly by what they do not say.

The way the opening scenes are handled is refreshing compared to many films of this nature. But an ominous tone is established early on, setting the stage for a major shift. We soon learn the reason for Nathan’s odd and awkward nature as well as why he is more sexually experienced than Roy. It has to do with his abusive father. Once Roy has initiated Nathan into his circle of friends, the group go on a camping expedition deep in the bayou. There they come across an old plantation house steeped in legends of numerous hauntings. After a night of passion, Nathan briefly breaks away from Roy, only to be forced to confront the demons of his past, with tragic results leading to a brutal reality. Nathan’s final humiliation is gratuitous and cruel. He is martyred by being put out of his misery and returns as an angel. The boy who has been victimized his entire life finally finds love, only to be raped and murdered because of who he is.

Based on the best-selling 1995 novel by Jim Grimsley, "Dream Boy" tells a story of awakening physical and emotional desire that take a horrible turn late in the story. Which boy is the "dream boy" for which boy is one of the many questions the film asks. It also probes the effects of sexual abuse in a small family. Stephan Bender and Maximillian Roeg are to be commended for their performances, the kind of natural and honest acting one rarely sees anymore. The two have a strange and wonderful chemistry. This film has a quiet intensity and power, is beautifully paced with attention to detail, which gives it a very genuine feel. There is a simplicity and sparsity to the movie that makes it feel like a classic. Richard Buckner composed the music and recorded the film's soundtrack. The script was written by director James Bolton from Jim Grimsley's novel.

Σε ένα σκηνικό που αναπαριστά το παλιό λιμάνι και λίγους εσωτερικούς χώρους, οι πρωταγωνιστές της ταινίας θα παίξουν το παιχνίδι της ταπείνωσης, της εξαθλίωσης, του ερωτικού πάθους και του σωματικού ή ψυχικού θανάτου. Η υποβλητική ατμόσφαιρα, η εντύπωση θεατρικού δρώμενου, η ανάγνωση αποσπασμάτων από το βιβλίο, η ποικίλη μουσική (κάπου θα αναγνωρίσετε ένα μοτίβο από τη "Φαίδρα" του Θεοδωράκη) και οι ωμές σκηνές ερωτικών περιπτύξεων μεταξύ αντρών συνθέτουν ένα έργο βάρβαρο και συνάμα γοητευτικό. Έμελλε να γίνει το κύκνειο άσμα του Φασμπίντερ και ταυτόχρονα μια από τις ωραιότερες και πιο προσωπικές του ταινίες.

Amphetamine (2010)

Scud is back – deal with it. Hong Kong's most unique self-financed auteur returns to his pet themes of life, death, love, sexuality and nudity with Amphetamine, an improvement on his earlier works in that it doesn't jam its self-awareness down your throat 24-7. Not that Scud has gotten rid of that particular obsession. At one point in Amphetamine, ripped swimming instructor Kafka (Byron Pang) visits an art gallery with gay finance worker Daniel (Thomas Price), where the two take in a photo exhibition highlighting stills from Permanent Residence. They even talk about the film briefly, though thankfully neither of them says something like, "That movie was great, I loved it!" Scud, your restraint here is appreciated.
It you've seen any Scud movies, you should know that there's some massive sadness coming down the pipeline - so Kafka succeeding at salvation is pretty much a dead deal from minute one. Scud's movies have never been mega-happy affairs, so expecting some kind of storybook ending from Amphetamine would not be right. This is a movie about damaged people living in a damaged world, and how they can heal and help one another – for a while anyway.

PROM QUEEN, THE MARC HALL STORY , ( 2004)

This film is important for many different reasons:
1) The story is true, it happened in 2002 in Canada (in Oshawa, Ontario) and shook the country and the international press
2) This film about equal rights for all, was produced with the participation of the Government of Canada and the local government of Ontario.
3) The teenager gay hero fought against the powerful Catholic Church and the Constitution of Canada and won, citing his human rights as a homosexual.
4) At his side stood, not only his parents (faithful Catholics themselves!) but friends and classmates and also the local labor union (CAW) !

Marc, the son of a middle class working family attends a school of the Catholic Church. For Graduates Dance (Prom), he registers his partner Jason, as his prom date. The Principal refuses and Marc is forced to turn to the school board, where they too deny him the right to bring his partner to the prom. Marc, with the consent of his parents and the help of an activist lawyer, starts a legal battle against the school board, the Catholic Church and eventually also against the Canadian Constitution as the latter gives to the Church the right to run their schools at will. The passion of the young teenager shook Canada and may have contributed to this country being one of the most liberal and democratic on equal human rights for all citizens. After these events Marc became known in Canada as Cinderfella (from Cinderella).

Details not shown in the movie: The court not only got a decision in favor of Marc, but also issued a preventative warning for the schoolboard not to cancel the prom.

4) Στο πλευρό του στάθηκαν όχι μόνο οι γονείς του (πιστοί Καθολικοί οι ίδιοι!), αλλά και οι φίλοι και συμμαθητές του και επίσης το τοπικό Εργατικό Συνδικάτο (CAW), δηλ η τοπική ΓΣΕ!

Ο Μαρκ, γυιός μιάς ασήμαντης μικροαστικής εργατικής οικογένειας, είναι στην τελευταία τάξη ενός λυκείου τής Καθολικής Εκκλησίας. Στις ετοιμασίες για τον Χορό Τελειοφοίτων (Prom) δηλώνει για συνοδό του τον ομοερωτικό σύντροφό του Τζέησον. Ο Λυκειάρχης αρνείται κι ο Μαρκ αναγκάζεται να στραφεί στο ΔΣ τού σχολείου, όπου όμως πάλι τού αρνούνται το δικαίωμα να φέρει τον σύντροφό του στο Χορό. Ο Μαρκ τότε με την συγκατάθεση τών γονιών του και την βοήθεια ενός δικηγόρου ακτιβιστή στρέφεται κατά τού ΔΣ τού σχολείου, κατά τής Καθολικής Εκκλησίας και εντέλει και κατά τού Καναδέζικου Συντάγματος, που δίνει δικαίωμα στην Καθ. Εκκλησία να διοικεί τα σχολεία της όπως θέλει. Το πάθος τού νεαρού έφηβου, συντάραξε τον Καναδά και ίσως συνέβαλε στο να έχει έκτοτε αυτή η χώρα μιά απ'τις πιό φιλελεύθερες και δημοκρατικές νομοθεσίας σχετικά με τα Ισα Ανθρώπινα Δικαιώματα για όλους τους πολίτες της.

Μετά από αυτά τα γεγονότα ο Μαρκ Χωλλ έγινε γνωστός στον Καναδά ως Cinderfella (Σταχτομπούτος), από το Cinderella (Σταχτομπούτα.

Λεπτομέρεια, που δεν δείχνει η ταινία: Το δικαστήριο όχι μόνο πήρε ευνοϊκή υπέρ τού Μαρκ απόφαση, αλλά επίσης προληπτικά απαγόρευσε στο ΔΣ τού σχολείου να ακυρώσει τον χορό.

Christopher And His Kind (2010)

In 1931 budding author Christopher Isherwood goes to Berlin at the invitation of his friend W. H. Auden for the gay sex that abounds in the city. Whilst working as an English teacher his housemates include bewigged old queen Gerald Hamilton and would-be actress Jean Ross,who sings tunelessly in a seedy cabaret club. They and others he meets get put into his stories. After a fling with sexy rent boy Caspar he falls for street sweeper Heinz,paying medical bills for the boy's sickly mother, to the disapproval of her other son,Nazi Gerhardt. With Fascism rapidly rising Christopher returns to London with Heinz but is unable to prevent his return to Germany when his visa expires. Years later Christopher,now a successful writer,returns to Berlin for a final meeting with Heinz,now married with children.

Το 1931 ο εκκολαπτόμενος συγγραφέας Christopher Isherwood πηγαίνει στο Βερολίνο μετά από πρόσκληση του φίλου του W.H. Auden. Χαρακτηριστικό εκείνης της εποχής στο Βερολίνο η ανάδυση του Ναζισμού και η gay ζωή αλλά και το sex που αφθονεί. Εκεί θα εργαστεί ως καθηγητής Αγγλικών ενώ παράλληλα θα γνωρίσει μια γριά βασίλισσα τον Gerald Hamilton και μια επίδοξο ηθοποιό όπου τραγουδάει σε άθλια καμπαρέ. Ο πρώτος του έρωτας ο Caspar αποδεικνύεται ψεύτικος καθώς σύντομα αποκαλύπτεται ότι ο Caspar είναι αρσενική πόρνη. Όμως ο Christopher δεν το βάζει κάτω και πολύ σύντομα γνωρίζει τον Heinz έναν νεαρό οδοκαθαριστή όπου και ερωτεύονται. Ο Christopher προσπαθεί να βοηθήσει την άρρωστη μητέρα του Heinz και να αντιμετωπίσει τον ναζιστή αδελφό του Gerhardt . Με τον φασισμό να εξαπλώνεται ταχέως ο Christopher αποφασίζει να γυρίσει πίσω στον Λονδίνο μαζί με τον Heinz όμως η καταγωγή του σε συνδυασμό με τις πολιτικές αναταραχές δεν του επιτρέπουν την ανανέωση της άδεια παραμονής του. Documentary series charting the change in attitudes to homosexuality during the 20th century, with the memories and testimonies of gays and lesbians who have lived through the changes. This programme follows the extraordinary explosion of liberation politics, living and loving together openly and the heady days of disco culture. And interviewees tell how the gay community has rallied together with the onslaught of Aids.
