Children Of God (2009)

Children of God deals with standard themes of homophobia in organized religion: But revitalizes them by drawing attention to a part of the world rarely given mass media coverage, the Bahamas. An artist struggling with his own sexuality and for inspiration, Johnny is sent to the island of Eleuthera by his teacher. Whilst here Johnny falls in love with the confident, but secretly gay, Romeo. Elsewhere on the island anti-gay rights campaigner Lena is slowly coming to terms with her own husbands (a pastor) homosexual double-life. As Lena struggles to battle on and Johnny deals with hostility from those close to Romeo, their two lifestyles eventually intertwine. Whilst being superbly shot, the lesions of this film are arguably tired. However actual footage of anti-gay protests from the Bahamas stops this film from becoming generic. What it manages to display is that we should be thankful for the liberal progress that society has made. But also that intolerance, and the abuse of religion in its service, is an ever-present and real threat.

Otto; or Up with Dead People (2008) Bruce La Bruce

Otto (Jey Crisfar) is a really cute twink -- who happens to be undead. When not feasting on roadkill or staggering around Berlin, Otto ponders his existence. Soon he finds a purpose with a role in a queer zombie movie directed by a would-be revolutionary lesbian filmmaker. Otto’s fellow cast members are amused by his “method acting,” and a few find him hot -- actually, zombies are fetishized in LaBruce’s queer universe -- but there’s more to this story than meets the jaundiced eye. Otto made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival (where a few audience members bolted from the theater during an outrageous scene tellingly dubbed the “gut fuck”), and while it contains the Canadian provocateur’s signature themes of explicit sexuality, dark humor and formalistic flourish, it also represents an artistic evolution for him. With an emotional core, superb music (including a melancholy song by Antony & The Johnsons) and many nods to genre influences like George Romero and Carnival of Souls, Otto rises high while remaining proudly, bloodily lowbrow.

HOUSE OF USHER (2008)

This is the gay version of Edgar Allan Poe's short terror story "The Fall of the House of Usher". Victor goes to visit his chum (former lover in this gay version) Roderick at the family estate and finds that the Usher parents have died leaving the house to Roderick and his sister Madeline. The siblings have become quite unhinged, with Roderick suffering from an overly acute perception and Madeline enduring fits of catalepsy. Roderick is in a state of depression and never ventures from the family mansion and is unable to go out into the light of day because of his sensitivity to light. He has also taken up photography as a hobby and is fond of photographing painters, plumbers and gardeners (all extremely handsome men). Then things get weird, as Victor uncovers more about the history of the house and the disappearances of those that entered it previously and he begins to realize that he is in mortal danger.

Αυτή είναι η gay εκδοχή τής σύντομης ιστορίας τρόμου τού Edgar Allan Poe με τίτλο "Η πτώση τού Οίκου των Άσερ". Ο Victor πάει να επισκεφθεί τον παλιό του συμμαθητή / φίλο (και πρώην εραστή σε αυτή την gay έκδοση) Roderick Usher στο κτήμα τής οικογένειας και διαπιστώνει ότι οι γονείς Ασερ έχουν πεθάνει αφήνοντας το σπίτι στον Roderick και την αδελφή του Madeline. Τα αδέλφια συμπεριφέρονται τελείως παλαβά, με τον Roderick να πάσχει από μια υπερβολικά οξεία αντίληψη αισθήσεων και την Madeline να πέφτει σε διαρκή καταληψία. Ο Roderick είναι σε κατάσταση κατάθλιψης και δεν μπορεί καν να βγει απ'την έπαυλη, λόγω τής ευαισθησίας του στο φως. Είναι επίσης λάτρης τής φωτογράφησης τών εργατών τού κτήματος (υδραυλικοί, ελαιοχρωματιστές, κηπουροί, που είναι όλοι τους πολύ ωραίοι άντρες). Make The Yuletide Gay (2009)

This film is about a closeted gay college student who visits his parents for Christmas. Things go messy when his boyfriend pays them a surprise visit. It's unusual to have a squeaky clean gay comedy with a festive theme. "Make the Yuletide Gay" is just that. It's so much fun to watch. Even if the budget was low, it didn't show. Every scene is decorated nicely in detail, creating a homely atmosphere that people feel immediately comfortable in. The script is funny, full of double meanings that makes me laugh hard. It also engagingly explores painful realities, making sure that it is not just a piece of forgettable popcorn flick. A mystery with a gay-hook and an unexpected end, that took me by surprise. A Crime and Punishment film ? A gay graphic novelist from the States is obsessed with finding his hunky Latin lover, who has mysteriously walked out on him; a search for the guy down in beautiful Buenos Aires, Argentina becomes a complex whirlpool of frustrated love, manipulation, deceit, doubt, suspicion, paranoia and murder.

Η ταινία γυρίστηκε το 2003 στην Αργεντινή, στη μέση τής δεινής οικονομικής κρίσης, που ζούσε η χώρα. Το 2000 ο λαός είχε επαναστατήσει και είχε διώξει τον τότε πρόεδρο ντε λα Ρούα και το ΔΝΤ απ' την χώρα. Στην ταινία θα δείτε σχόλια τών Αργεντίνων ηθοποιών για την δύσκολη κατάσταση, που περνούσαν τότε.

Mine Vaganti (Loose Cannons) 2010

 

Ο Tommaso είναι γιος μιας πλούσιας οικογένειας του ιταλικού νότου που έχει στην κατοχή της μια εταιρεία παραγωγής ζυμαρικών. Ζει όμως στη Ρώμη όπου σπουδάζει Οικονομικές Επιστήμες προκειμένου να επιστρέψει με το τέλος των σπουδών του στην ιδιαίτερη πατρίδα του για να αναλάβει από κοινού με τον αδελφό του την διοίκηση της πατρικής επιχείρησης.

Η επιστροφή του στην οικογενειακή εστία συμπίπτει με την επιθυμία του να αποκαλύψει στους δικούς του ότι είναι ομοφυλόφιλος και ότι θέλει να γίνει συγγραφέας.

Κατά τη διάρκεια ενός δείπνου που διοργανώνεται για να γιορτάσουν την συνεργασία με έναν νέο συνέταιρο που είναι έτοιμος να αποκαλύψει κι αυτός την σεξουαλική του ταυτότητα, τον προλαβαίνει εντελώς αναπάντεχα ο μεγάλος του αδελφός, ο Antonio, ο οποίος μετά από πολλά χρόνια αφοσίωσης στην οικογένεια και στην επιχείρηση, αποκαλύπτει ότι είναι ομοφυλόφιλος. Τελικά ο Τommaso κι επειδή ο πατέρας του περνάει έμφραγμα, για να μην επιδεινώσει την κατάστασή του, δεν αποκαλύπτεται και αναλαμβάνει την διεύθυνση της επιχείρησης.

«Οι ιστορίες αγάπης που δεν μπορούμε να ζήσουμε είναι αυτές που δεν τελειώνουν ποτέ», λέει ο πρωταγωνιστής σε κάποιο σημείο.

Η ταινία μέσω της κωμωδίας πραγματεύεται το θέμα της ομοφυλοφιλίας μέσα στην οικογένεια και ειδικά στον ιταλικό νότο που είναι γεμάτη προκαταλήψεις και ταμπού. Ωστόσο το θέμα της ταινίας δεν είναι μόνο η ομοφυλοφιλία, αλλά γενικότερα αυτό της ελευθερίας.

«Μην αφήσεις τους άλλους να σου πουν ποιόν πρέπει να αγαπήσεις και ποιόν να μισήσεις. Καλύτερα να κάνεις ο ίδιος το λάθος αυτό», είναι η συμβουλή της γιαγιάς, άλλης μιας «παρασυρόμενης νάρκης» που παντρεύτηκε αυτόν που της προόριζε η οικογένειά της παρόλο που ήταν ερωτευμένη με τον αδελφό του συζύγου της
