If you have seen "Braveheart" (1995, Mel Gibson), you probably remember that the English king Edward I Longshanks had an effeminated son and heir, who later became king Edward II. The Meaux Abbey Chronicle (Yorkshire) mentions that "Edward took too much delight in sodomy". Other Medieval Chroniclers criticized his desire for wicked and forbidden sex.
The 16th century English dramatist Christopher Marlowe explored the king's homosexuality in an unusually bold play (it was 1594 A.D.!!) which is making explicit reference to an open amorous relationship between the king and his minion Piers Gaveston.
In 1991, English director Derek Jarman adapted the Christopher Marlowe play into an avant-garde film which specifically portrays a homosexual relationship between Edward II and Gaveston. The director uses a mixture of contemporary and medieval props, sets and clothing. Jarman has added gay sex scenes and depicts Edward's army as Gay Rights protesters (this is a direct message against Margaret Thatcher and her homophobic speeches in the late 80's. On 24/May/1988 Mrs Thatcher had voted the infamous "Section 28" , which kicked off a campaign of violence, terror, court trials and even murders of LGBT persons, in the UK).

Τον 16ο αιώνα ο Άγγλος δραματουργός Κρίστοφερ Μάρλοου γράφει για την ομοφυλοφιλία τού βασιλιά σε ένα ασυνήθιστα τολμηρό για την εποχή του έργο (1594 μΧ) το οποίο κάνει ρητή αναφορά σε ερωτική σχέση μεταξύ τού βασιλιά και τού ευνοουμένου του Piers Gaveston.
Το 1991 ο Αγγλος σκηνοθέτη Derek Jarman προσάρμοσε το έργο τού Christopher Marlowe σε μια ταινία avant-garde που δείχνει καθαρά την ομοφυλοφιλική σχέση μεταξύ Εδουάρδου 2ου και Gaveston. Ο σκηνοθέτης χρησιμοποιεί σύγχρονα και μεσαιωνικά σκηνικά και ένδυση. Ο Jarman έχει προσθέσει γκέι σεξ και δείχνει τον στρατό τού Εδουάρδου ως Ακτιβιστές Gay Δικαιωμάτων (αυτό είναι ένα άμεσο μήνυμα κατά τής Μάργκαρετ Θάτσερ και τις Ομοφοβικές ομιλίες της στα τέλη τής δεκαετίας τού 80. Στις 24/5/1988 η Θάτσερ ψήφισε την διαβόητη Τροπολογία "Section 28" , και άρχισε στην Βρετανία μια εκστρατεία τρόμου, δικαστηρίων ακόμα και φόνων ατόμων LGBT).
